Fabric shades, or blinds, offer an attractive and affordable design solution for a variety of different rooms in the home. Like curtains, fabric shades reduce heat loss through windows during cold weather and reduce heat from sunlight during hot weather. Window blinds have been used to cover windows for hundreds of years and inexpensive blinds made from cheap cloth were often used in the 1800’s.
Window shades made of fabric come in a number of different styles and are commonly used in most modern homes. Blinds can roll up around a metal batten, fold up using cord and thin horizontal slats, or fold using no horizontal slats in an unstructured way.
Fabric roller shades are the most cost effective type of window blinds as they use the minimum amount of fabric and are usually used in kitchens and bathrooms. This type of blind lies flat against the window and when rolled up, it allows the maximum amount of light into the room. They work best when mounted inside a window recess. For a coordinated look, roller shades can be used in conjunction with curtains, pelmets, swaggers, and valances. Roller blinds come in standard sizes, but can easily be cut to size if your window falls between two different sizes.
Fabric roman shades, or roman blinds, are an extremely stylish way to dress a window. They can either be fitted in the window recess and combined with pelmets and curtains, or fitted on the outside of a window. This type of blind has enough detail to look decorative as well as being functional. They are constructed using dowels sewn into pockets at regular intervals. Cord is threaded through rings on the dowels and when the cord is pulled up, neat folds are created.
Both types of blind are relatively easy to make. By making your own blinds, not only can you match the fabric precisely to your existing décor, but you can enjoy the satisfaction of creating a lovely piece of window dressing.
Roller blinds can be made from kits and will fit windows up to around 8 feet wide. Specially stiffened fabrics can be brought to make the blind, but if you wish to use a different fabric, it can be stiffened using an aerosol spray of liquid stiffening solution. This will also stop the fabric from fraying at the edges, which eliminates the need for side hems.
The materials needed to make roman blinds can be bought from most haberdashery stores. As well as the fabric you have chosen for the blind, you will also need some lining fabric.
Whereas roller blinds tend to be mainly used in kitchens and bathrooms, roman blinds are often used in many different rooms in the home. They can look very attractive in living rooms or bedrooms. They can also be used to great effect in conservatories and are ideal for shutting the excess sun out during the day. If you have upvc plastic windows, fabric shades can easily be attached to Velcro strips at the top of the window.
